About Handmadebyakua

In Northern Ghana, basket weaving is a way of life for the Gurunsi people. For generations, women and men have gathered in open courtyards and under the shade of trees, weaving intricate designs with elephant grass, a special fiber harvested from the land around them. The technique is passed down through generations, each family refining the skill and each weaver adding their unique touch.
Handmade By Akua exists within this tradition. The brand is built on the knowledge and expertise of artisans whose hands have shaped baskets for decades. Every basket carries traces of the weaver’s skill, time and dedication. The process is slow, intentional, and deeply rooted in tradition.

All our baskets are made from sustainably harvested elephant grass and raffia, sourced from local farmers in neighboring towns. Each vibrant bag is dyed using non-toxic pigments, ensuring both quality and environmental responsibility. From leather and linen to fashionable and authentic cowrie shells and traditional beads woven into some of our most cherished designs, every element is sourced from local artisans. Each material is intentionally chosen, supporting sustainability while honoring the craftsmanship and culture that shape our creations.

At its heart, Handmade By Akua is about craftsmanship, sustainability, and the people who make each piece truly unique and special.

FOUNDER

Raised in Northern Ghana, Rhoda Akua Chapo grew up surrounded by culture, tradition and a strong sense of community. Learning business from her mother and navigating markets by age 14. She would help carry bundles of fabric to nearby villages and markets, witnessing firsthand the power of trade and community.

Though business shaped her foundation, creativity was always present. She found joy in the small details like altering clothing to fit her personality, and reimagining everyday pieces. But it wasn’t until 2021, during a time of uncertainty, that everything changed. Searching for home décor, she discovered woven baskets. She saw them as an art form with deep cultural roots and not just functional objects. That moment sparked a vision: to honor traditional craftsmanship while redefining it for a contemporary world.

With no formal design background but a deep sense of purpose, she founded Handmade By Akua. The brand has since been recognized on the Today Show and has reached 27 countries.
